Jim Thome rumors: Twins interested in minor league deal

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The Twins would likely sign Jim Thome if he were willing to agree to a minor league contract.

Free agent designated hitter Jim Thome is reportedly seeking a major league contract. While the Minnesota Twins aren't interested in guaranteeing Thome a roster spot, they would likely take on the veteran if he were willing to sign a minor league deal, according to Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500.

Woflson continues to report that Twins manager Ron Gardenhire is interested in acquiring Thome. However, Minnesota's front office is apparently less keen on the idea of bringing the 42-year-old on board. This would seem to be a moot point until Thome lowers his demands of a major league contract, as teams aren't interested in extending him anything more than an invitation to spring training.

The Twins held discussions with Thome's camp earlier in the winter, but nothing came of the initial talks. At this point, Minnesota is prepared to enter the season with Ryan Doumit as its primary DH.

Thome left Arizona -- where he's been working out as he awaits an offer -- and recently returned home, but Wolfosn expects him to be back soon. The slugger spent the 2012 season with the Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles. After hitting .242/.338/.516 over 71 plate appearances with the Phillies, he posted a batting line of .257/.348/.396 in 115 plate appearances with the O's.
