Nationals rumors: Chris Snyder 'likely' to be traded

USA TODAY Sports

Washington Nationals catcher Chris Snyder is "likely to be moved" before the start of the regular season.

Washington Nationals catcher Chris Snyder is "likely to be moved" before the start of the regular season, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal notes that the Los Angeles Angels are among the teams interested in the reserve backstop.

The Nationals signed Snyder to a minor league contract this offseason. He doesn't have a spot on the major league team with Wilson Ramos and Kurt Suzuki in the mix, and this makes him "almost certain to be moved before Opening Day," according to Rosenthal.

Washington is very deep at the catching position even beyond Ramos and Suzuki. They have two backstops they like at the Triple-A level -- Jhonatan Solano and Carlos Maldonado -- while Sandy Leon is projected for Double-A.

It was recently reported that the Angels are in the market for a backup catcher. Hank Conger was the favorite to be the team's No. 2 -- behind regular Chris Iannetta -- but he's dealt with a throwing issue this spring. For that reason, LA is perusing the market for backup catchers.

Snyder spent the 2012 season with the Houston Astros, hitting .176/.295/.308 with eight doubles and seven home runs over 258 plate appearances. The 32-year-old owns a career batting line of .225/.329/.385 over nine seasons in the majors.
