More Giants: Giants as Star Wars Characters
Schulman notes that he hasn't heard if the Giants were in on John McDonald -- a veteran infielder that was recently traded by the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's also not sure if they are interested in free agent Ronny Cedeno -- who was recently released by the St. Louis Cardinals.
San Francisco's in-house reserve infielders have disappointed this spring, according to Chris Haft of MLB.com. Tony Abreu has been hampered by a knee injury, Wilson Valdez has been "adequate" and Kensuke Tanaka has only hit .233 while committing six errors.
Beyond Cedeno, the free agent market also offers former Giants infielder Ryan Theriot. While the 33-year-old did a solid job manning a veteran reserve role for the club last season, he is reportedly seeking more significant playing time this year. He does seem like a perfect fit for San Francisco if they are seeking such a player, so there could still be a match to be had.
The Giants could also examine the market of out-of-option players or those otherwise unexpected to break camp on their team's roster. This market should begin to heat up with the end of the exhibition season approaching.
