The Kansas City Royals have released outfielder Endy Chavez, the team has announced.

Chavez signed a minor league contract with the Royals this offseason. Following the veteran's release, Kansas City now has 38 active players in camp.

Chavez was competing for a bench spot with the Royals. He wasn't especially impressive this spring -- hitting .188/.212/.188 with no extra-base hits over 33 plate appearances.

Chavez spent the 2012 season with the Baltimore Orioles. The 35-year-old hit .203/.236/.278 with six doubles and two home runs over 169 plate appearances, while manning all three outfield positions for the O's.

In his 11 seasons in the majors, Chavez has played for the Orioles, Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners. He owns a career batting line of .269/.309/.367.
