More Yankees: Know Your 40 - Jose Ramirez
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports confirms the report, saying that the Yankees "figure to add another corner infielder before the end of spring training." He recently reported that New York is asking around about everyone.
The Yankees find themselves in need of a corner infielder as regular third baseman Alex Rodriguez and first baseman Mark Teixeira are set to start the regular season on the disabled list. Beyond A-Rod and Teixeira, New York will also be without outfielder Curtis Granderson on Opening Day.
When the extent of Teixeira's injury was initially announced, the Yankees were tied to veteran corner infielders -- including free agents Scott Rolen and Derrek Lee and even former Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones. However, New York couldn't find a taker among the experienced corner infielders.
At this point, the pickings are slim for the Yankees. As the start of the regular season approaches, out-of-option players and others that aren't expected to break camp with their current teams figure to come available. Offseason acquisition Kevin Youkilis provides New York with some flexibility when it comes to acquiring a first or third baseman, since he has the ability to man both positions.
