Rockies rumors: Ramon Hernandez on the move by Thursday?

Kelley L Cox-US PRESSWIRE

"All signs point" to Yorvit Torrealba making the club and Hernandez being dealt before Opening Day.

The Colorado Rockies have yet to make anything official, but "all signs point" to Yorvit Torrealba making the roster as the backup catcher and Ramon Hernandez being traded, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

Torrealba was signed to a minor-league deal in late January as an insurance policy in case Hernandez went down, but has usurped his fellow backstop on the depth chart with a strong spring both at and behind the plate.

Renck adds that the situation will likely be resolved by Thursday -- the last official day of camp and the day before Torrealba's opt-out clause kicks in -- which could mean that Hernandez will be on a new team by Opening Day. The Pirates, Rays, Phillies, and Orioles have all made noise on the backup backstop rumor mill lately, but it's unclear whether Hernandez is the type of player those teams are seeking.

Hernandez, 36, is coming off of a career-worst year -- in which he hit just .217/.247/.353 in 52 games -- that was plagued by injury, so Colorado isn't exactly selling high on the veteran catcher. He is set to earn $3.2 million this season, so the Rockies may be forced to eat a bit of his contract if they do deal him.
