Nationals would grant Ohman his release

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

Nationals pitcher WIll Ohman could have his release granted if he asked for it.

Will Ohman could be granted his release if he asked for it, reports William Ladson of MLB.com.

Ohman was re-assigned to the team's minor league camp before yesterday's game ended, but has not yet asked for his release. He does not have an out-clause in his deal, but the Nationals would be willing to release him if he wanted to pursue a better opportunity elsewhere.

The 35-year old has been an effective lefty-specialist for most of his career, and he has been able to sustain a long career because of that. He has pitched for the Cubs, Dodgers, Orioles, White Sox, and now the Nationals. He could get some interest from teams looking for Triple-A bullpen depth, but that role would not be all too different from what he is facing in Washington.

More Nats: Nats cut 4

Ohman struggled last season, pitching 26.2 innings and posting an ERA of 6.41. Ohman may be finished as a pitcher, which his recent statistics would certainly support.

Ohman could receive interest from teams such as the Mets, who could certainly add some bullpen depth, or the Tigers, if they wanted a veteran presence in the bullpen to calm the young Bruce Rondon. It is yet to be seen what course of action Ohman will take in response to being cut.
