Padres rumors: Chase Headley not available yet

Jennifer Stewart

While the Padres aren't ready to trade Chase Headley yet, they figure to revisit dealing him this summer.

Yesterday MLB Daily Dish's Nathan Aderhold reported that the San Diego Padres had started listening to offers for third baseman Chase Headley. However, Josh Byrnes told Peter Gammons that he's not ready to break up his team just yet.

Based on Byrnes' comments, Gammons went on to speculate that the Padres aren't likely to revisit trading Headley until closer to the 2013 trade deadline. San Diego has expressed an interest in potentially retaining Headley by signing him to a long-term contract extension. However, the third baseman could also be dealt to help expedite the team's rebuilding effort.

Whatever the case, Headley figures to find his way back into rumor headlines in the near future. The 28-year-old is under team control for two more seasons, as he'll be arbitration-eligible once more following the 2013 campaign. After earning $3.475 million last season, Headley received a significant raise considering his solid showing last year. The third baseman will earn $8.575 million this season.

Headley had been a solid third baseman for the Padres since debuting in 2007, but he broke out in a big way last year. Over 699 plate appearances, he hit .286/.376/.498 with 31 doubles, two triples and 31 home runs.

While Headley could become an important part of future Padres' teams, the club has top third base prospect Jedd Gyorko waiting in the wings. The 24-year-old enters the 2013 season as Baseball America's No. 50 overall prospect.
