Deolis Guerra injury: Twins RHP out three months

Minnesota Twins right-hander Deolis Guerra has been hospitalized after a blood clot was revealed in his right shoulder.

Minnesota Twins right-hander Deolis Guerra has been hospitalized after a blood clot was revealed in his right shoulder, according to Phil Miller of The Star Tribune. The clot will require surgery, which is expected to sideline Guerra for approximately three months.

Guerra was slated to pitch for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, but he had to bow out earlier this week due to the injury.

The Twins acquired Guerra along with Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber and Kevin Mulvey in the trade that sent left-hander Johan Santana to the New York Mets. The next season, the right-hander was considered the No. 35 overall prospect in the game by Baseball America.

Unfortunately for Guerra and the Twins, he quickly fell off the prospect map following several disappointing seasons in Minnesota's farm system. He's spent the past three years between Double- and Triple-A, and the Twins moved him to the bullpen last season. Over 36 appearances, he posted an ERA of 4.11 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio (SO/BB) of 3.23.

Guerra has yet to make his major league debut. Over seven seasons in the minors, the 23-year-old owns a career ERA of 4.87 with a 2.04 SO/BB. In two seasons at the Triple-A level, he's maintained a 5.47 ERA.
