Twins rumors: Minnesota 'kicking the tires' on Julio Borbon

Christian Petersen

The Twins are "kicking the tires" on outfielder Julio Borbon.

A Minnesota Twins team official told Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN that the team is "kicking the tires" on outfielder Julio Borbon, who was recently designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers.

While the unnamed official indicated that the Twins could pursue Borbon, Wolfson doesn't get the sense that Minnesota will make a trade for the outfielder. Instead, he thinks the team could potentially claim Borbon on waivers if he reaches them.

The Rangers designated Borbon for assignment earlier this week to make room on their roster for starting pitcher Nick Tepesch. Beyond the Twins, it's been rumored that the New York Mets and Houston Astros could express interest in Borbon. Houston is one of the few clubs that will get a shot at claiming Borbon before the Twins do, as team's 2012 regular season records are used to determine waiver order.

Borbon was Texas' regular center fielder in 2010. That season he hit .276/.309/.340 with 11 doubles, four triples and three home runs with 15 stolen bases in 22 attempts over 468 plate appearances. The 27-year-old owns a career batting line of .283/.324/.358 over parts of four years in the majors.
