Delmon Young injury: Phillies OF nearing rehab assignment

USA TODAY Sports

Phillies OF Delmon Young is nearing a minor league rehab assignment.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Delmon Young has been progressing in his recovery from microfracture surgery on his right ankle, and the offseason acquisition could begin a minor league rehab assignment as early as this weekend, according to Adam Berry of MLB.com.

Young played a full seven-inning extended spring training contest in right field Thursday, and he was slated to do so again today. He wasn't challenged much in the field, but Berry notes that he did make one catch running toward the fence in right-center field. Young went 2-for-6 at the plate with a walk and two strikeouts.

After the game, Young said that he felt "fine" and was "glad to get back out there." Today marks the first time he'll play in back-to-back days since his rehab process began. If he is able to make it through another seven-inning game and doesn't experience soreness Saturday, the 27-year-old should begin his rehab assignment soon.

The Phillies signed Young to a one-year, $750k free agent contract over the winter to be their regular in right field. He appeared in 151 games for the Detroit Tigers last season, hitting .267/.296/.411 with 27 doubles and 18 home runs.
