Twins rumors: No contact with Jim Thome

US PRESSWIRE

The Twins haven't had contact with free agent DH Jim Thome "for a couple of months."

Over the winter, there was speculation that free agent designated hitter Jim Thome could reunite with the Minnesota Twins. However, an agreement was never reached and it doesn't appear one is imminent, as assistant general manager Rob Anthony told Jesse Lund of SB Nation's Twinkie Town that the team hasn't spoken with the future Hall of Famer "for a couple of months."

Anthony acknowledged that the Twins held initial conversations with Thome and his representation. Minnesota indicated that the slugger could be a fit for the team, while Thome indicated he wished to continue his playing career. However, talks didn't progress much beyond this early stage, according to Anthony.

Thome had an understanding of what the Twins had in mind when it came to reaching an agreement, while the Twins knew what the veteran was seeking in a new contract. While Anthony wouldn't get into the details of discussions, it's been speculated that Thome was seeking more of a guaranteed role and contract, and the Twins were only offering a minor league deal with a shot at breaking camp with the team.

At this point, Thome is still a free agent, and it appears he's still open to continuing his career. The 42-year-old spent the 2012 season with the Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies, hitting a combined .252/.344/.442 with seven doubles and eight home runs over 186 plate appearances.
