Mets injury news: Frank Francisco, Shaun Marcum

Injury updates on Mets pitchers Frank Francisco and Shaun Marcum

New York Mets right-handed reliever Frank Francisco is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment today, while the team doesn't expect starting pitcher Shaun Marcum to be activated from the disabled list until the middle of next week at the earliest, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Francisco will begin his rehab assignment with the Mets' Single-A affiliate. The right-hander underwent surgery in December to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow. While he was initially cleared to return for spring training, he experienced inflammation in the elbow during the exhibition season.

Entering the spring as the Mets' closer, Francisco's injury opened the door for Bobby Parnell to take over the reins to start the season.

Marcum is slated to throw a bullpen session today. If all goes well, the right-hander will throw a three- or four-inning game on the back field in extended spring training on Thursday, according to Rubin. Marcum has been sidelined since the spring due to nerve inflammation in his neck.

The Mets signed Marcum to a free agent contract over the winter. He started 21 games for the Milwaukee Brewers last season, posting an ERA of 3.70.
