Rays acquire Jeff Beliveau from Rangers

USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired left-hander Jeff Beliveau from the Texas Rangers.

The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired left-hander Jeff Beliveau from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations, the team has announced.

Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Tribune adds that in order to clear a roster spot for Beliveau, the Rays moved right-hander Jeff Niemann to the 60-day disabled list.

Beliveau was designated for assignment by the Rangers earlier this month to make room on the roster for catcher Robinson Chirinos, who was acquired from the Rays. Today's trade is a separate transaction, as Topkin notes that Beliveau is not the player to be named later in the Chirinos deal.

The Rangers claimed Beliveau off waivers from the Chicago Cubs in December. The southpaw made his major league debut for the Cubs last season. The 25-year-old allowed nine runs on 21 hits and 12 walks with 17 strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings.

Beliveau spent a majority of the 2012 season with the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate. Over 37 appearances in the minors the left-hander maintained an ERA of 3.89 with 10.6 strikeouts and 3.7 walks per nine innings. Over five seasons at the minor league level he’s posted an ERA of 2.86 with 11.6 strikeouts and 4.0 walks per nine innings.
