Boston Red Sox option Alfredo Aceves to Triple-A

USA TODAY Sports

The right-handed pitcher has been ineffective in the rotation and out of the bullpen this season.

The Boston Red Sox have optioned pitcher Alfredo Aceves to Triple-A Pawtucket, and have recalled Ryan Lavarnway to take his spot on the roster, first reported by Red Sox beat writer Pete Abraham.

The move should not come as too big of a shock, as Aceves has been completely ineffective so far this season. Aceves has made three starts this season and two appearances out of the bullpen, and has pitched poorly in both roles. He currently owns an 8.66 ERA through 17.2 innings, and is averaging 6.11 BB/9 and 3.06 HR/9.

Aceves last start in particular was a train-wreck. The right-hander surrendered eight runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings pitched, striking out three batters and walking four. Aceves has failed to pitch more than five innings in each of his three starts this season.

Boston called Lavarnway up from Triple-A to fill the spot on the 25-man roster. The 25 year-old catcher has swung the bat well in Pawtucket this season, hitting .310/.423/.452 in his first 52 plate appearances. Lavarnway has hit .172/.230/.286 in his 209 plate appearances at the major-league level over the past two seasons.

John Lackey is expected to replace Aceves in the rotation. Lackey is planning to make his first start for the Red Sox on Sunday after he throws a bullpen session Thursday.
