Athletics notes: Bartolo Colon to return Saturday

Doug Pensinger

Bartolo Colon's suspension ends Saturday, and the A's will waste no time inserting him back into the starting rotation.

Right-hander Bartolo Colon's 50-game suspension for testing positive for testosterone will come to an end on Saturday, and the Oakland Athletics will waste no time getting him back into the starting rotation. Colon is slated to pitch Saturday against the Houston Astros, according to Casey Pratt of CSN Bay Area.

The A's re-signed Colon to a one-year, $3 million contract this winter after the veteran was banned for performance-enhancing drug use. He hasn't pitched for Oakland since August, but he was effective in his first year with the team prior to suspension.

In 24 starts for Oakland, Colon posted an ERA of 3.43 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.96 over 152 1/3 innings. The 40-year-old maintained an ERA of 3.72 over the past two seasons with the A's and New York Yankees.

In giving Colon the start on Saturday, the A's other starters will receive an extra day off due to Monday's off-day. The veteran will be taking the spot of Dan Straily -- who is set to pitch Friday in Houston -- in Oakland's rotation.
