Phillies activate Delmon Young from DL; Designate Ezequiel Carrera for assignment

USA TODAY Sports

Delmon Young has not played this season after having ankle surgery, but could serve as the DH for the Phillies against the Indians tonight.

Delmon Young has been called up by the Philadelphia Phillies for their series against the Cleveland Indians. To make room for Young, the Phillies have designated outfielder Ezequiel Carrera for assignment.

Young, 27, is likely going to be in the Phillies' lineup Tuesday night, reports Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Enquirer. It's likely Philadelphia is calling him up to be the designated hitter in their interleague series with the Indians. The Phillies are still uncertain in his preparedness to play right field, a position he has not manned since 2007.

Young signed with the Phillies as a free agent in the offseason, but has yet to play this season due to ankle surgery. He has played seven games on a rehab stint between High-A and Triple-A, picking up 11 hits. The injury may also play a role in his potential DH stint. Philadelphia may not want to push him too hard in the field quite yet.

Young last was with the Detroit Tigers, playing 151 games last season. He hit 18 home runs, mostly as a DH, but got on base at a paltry .296 clip. Baseball America's former top prospect has struggled to live up to expectations. He has a .742 career OPS and is anything but a defensive stalwart. The Phillies are his fourth team since he broke into the majors in 2006 as a 20 year old.

Carrera received 13 at-bats with Philadelphia this season, garnering just one hit and one walk. He received two starts and was used primarily as a late-innings defensive replacement.

The Philies have been starting John Mayberry in right field during Young's absence.
