Sean Marshall injury: Reds' LHP dealing with shoulder fatigue

Reds left-hander Sean Marshall is dealing with shoulder fatigue.

The Cincinnati Reds have yet to use left-handed reliever Sean Marshall over their first two games of the regular season. It turns out that his inactivity is due to the fact that he's dealing with a fatigued throwing shoulder, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

Reds manager Dusty Baker told reporters this morning that Marshall was "ailing." The southpaw went into more detail, saying that the unusually long spring training -- due to the World Baseball Classic -- caused him to peak "a little early." He's currently going through therapy to strengthen his shoulder, and he feels he's "probably a day or two away." from returning. He anticipates that he could be ready to make his 2013 regular season debut on Friday.

The top priority of Marshall and the Reds is getting the left-hander back in the bullpen without suffering a setback. He's "made good progress" over the past few days, and he'll throw again today before hopefully being available tomorrow.

The Reds acquired Marshall from the Chicago Cubs in December of 2011 in exchange for a package built around starting pitcher Travis Wood. In his first season with Cincinnati, the 30-year-old maintained an ERA of 2.51 with nine saves and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.63 over 61 innings.

In seven seasons in the majors, Marshall owns a career ERA of 3.81, but he's posted a mark of 2.47 from 2010-12.
