Marlins to place Casey Kotchman on DL

USA TODAY Sports

Marlins are considering veteran Casey Kotchman as day-to-day after he suffered a strained left hamstring during yesterday's loss to the Washington Nationals.

UPDATE - The Marlins will place Kotchman on the DL on Friday and announce the corresponding roster move at that time, according to Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald.

ORIGINAL - The Miami Marlins are already without first baseman Logan Morrison, and now they may be without his backup for a while. The Marlins are considering veteran Casey Kotchman as day-to-day after he suffered a strained left hamstring during yesterday's loss to the Washington Nationals, according to Juan C. Rodriguez of The Sun Sentinel.

Kotchman sustained his injury in the fifth inning of yesterday's contest while attempting to leg out a 1-6-3 double play. He immediately grabbed at his leg and "went down" in a heap, according to manager Mike Redmond. Miami will know more about Kotchman's status today, but the skipper acknowledged that hamstring injuries "are typically pretty sore the next day."

Over the first two games of the regular season, Kotchman was 0-for-5 at the plate. He signed a free agent contract with the Marlins this offseason after spending last year with the Cleveland Indians. Over 500 plate appearances for the Tribe, the 30-year-old hit .229/.280/.333 with 12 doubles and 12 home runs. He owns a career batting line of .261/.327/.387 over parts of 10 seasons in the majors.

If Kotchman is unable to play, the Marlins could go with Greg Dobbs at first base.
