Francisco Cordero aiming for 2014 return

Bob Levey

Francisco Cordero will take the 2013 season off to recover from injury in hopes of signing with a major league team next winter.

Free agent Francisco Cordero will undergo surgery on his left shoulder -- non-throwing arm -- later this month to help repair an old injury, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal adds that the veteran is planning to pitch during winter ball, while he's aiming to return to the majors in 2014.

Cordero hit the free agent market after spending the 2012 season with the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros. After signing a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the Jays last offseason, the right-hander appeared in 41 games for the club, posting an ERA of 5.77.

Toronto shipped Cordero to Houston in July in the mega-trade that also involved Ben Francisco and J.A. Happ. He appeared in six games -- allowing 11 runs over five innings -- before being released by the Astros. Prior to his release, Cordero had been sidelined by a toe injury.

Before he signed with the Blue Jays last winter, Cordero had been the Cincinnati Reds' closer from 2008-11. The 37-year-old has been a closer for the majority of his career, and owns an ERA of 3.38 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.12 over 14 seasons in the majors.
