Angels place Tommy Hanson on restricted list

USA TODAY Sports

The Angels starter has left the team to attend to personal matters.

The Los Angeles Angels have placed starting pitcher Tommy Hanson on the disabled list as he continues to deal with family matters.

More Angels: Halos Heaven

Hanson has already spent time on the bereavement list this season following the sudden death of his stepbrother, as he was away from the team from April 22-27. Hanson then returned to the team and made his next two scheduled starts.

The restricted list, unlike the bereavement list, does not require a player to return to the team after seven days, so it is currently unknown how much time Hanson will miss. Hanson was scheduled to start on Friday, but was scratched from the start.

Barry Enright is receiving the spot start for the Angels. Enright has not started a game at the major-league level since he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2011, but has started four games for Triple-A Salt Lake City this year. The right-hander has made two relief appearances for Los Angeles this season, and currently owns a 9.00 ERA.

The Angels recalled reliever Matt Roth to take Hanson's spot on the 25-man roster. The promotion is Roth's second of the season, as the southpaw made seven appearances for the Angels earlier in the season. The lefty has posted a 9.38 ERA in 9.2 innings this season, but his 1.83 FIP suggests Roth has pitched better than his earned-run numbers indicate.
