Seattle Mariners option Hector Noesi, recall Danny Farquhar

USA TODAY Sports

Seattle called up Farquhar for some bullpen depth after Noesi made a spot start on Thursday.

The Seattle Mariners called up Danny Farquhar from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, optioning Hector Noesi to the minors to clear room for the relief pitcher.

The Mariners acquired Farquhar last season in the trade that sent Ichiro Suzuki to the New York Yankees. Farquhar has looked electric out of the bullpen this season for Tacoma, saving six games and posting a 2.25 ERA in his first 15 appearances. The right-hander has fanned 30 batters in 20 innings pitched, only walking four batters.

Farquhar credits the development of his curveball to his increased success this season. The 26-year-old compliments a mid 90's four-seam fastball with a low 90's cut fastball, but uses his breaking ball to help change speeds.

Noesi made an emergency start on Thursday after Aaron Harang came down with a stiff back. The righty pitched well on short notice, allowing an unearned run in 4 /13 innings against the New York Yankees. Noesi surrendered one hit, striking out four hitters while walking one.

Mariners manager Eric Wedge was pleased with the pitcher's performance, as Noesi pitched with an aggressiveness the team had been encouraging. Noesi's stay in the minors may prove brief, especially if Harang's back injury is serious. Noesi and Harang are both scheduled to start on Tuesday; if Harang needs to miss his next start, Noesi is a logical replacement.
