Giants place Vogelsong, Casilla on disabled list

With both pitchers out for the time being, the Giants have called up Sandy Rosario and Brett Pill.

The San Francisco Giants placed pitchers Ryan Vogelsong and Santiago Casilla on the disabled list Tuesday. Vogelsong broke his hand while hitting on Monday night while Casilla has been battling a cyst on his right knee for the past two weeks.

To take their roster spots, the Giants have called up relief pitcher Sandy Rosario and first baseman Brett Pill from Triple-A Fresno, reports John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Vogelsong, 35, had not been pitching well after being an All Star in 2011 and having another good year in 2012. This season, he has a 7.19 ERA with a 1.727 WHIP. On the other hand, Casilla, 32, has been having an excellent year with a 1.89 ERA in 21 relief appearances. He has only pitched in two games since May 8, however, due to the cyst.

Rosario, 27, will slot into the Giants' bullpen with Casilla out. In 16 relief appearances for Fresno, he has a 3.33 ERA. He also pitched well in the minors in 2012. He has pitched in 11 major league games over the past four seasons.

Pill, 28, will act as an extra pinch hitter and backup first baseman for San Francisco. He is in the midst of the best minor league season of his career with a 1.085 OPS over his first 35 games.

There may be more moves for the Giants later in the week as they have not announced a starter for May 26, when Vogelsong would have made his next start. The team does have an offday coming up and could choose to skip that spot in the rotation.
