Indians call up Scott Barnes, designate David Huff for assignment

David Richard-US PRESSWIRE

The Indians swapped a pair of lefthanders in Barnes and Huff.

The Cleveland Indians called up left handed pitcher Scott Barnes from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday. The team hopes that he can help a bullpen that has been heavily used over the past week.

To make room for Barnes, LHP David Huff was designated for assignment, according to the Indians' official Twitter handle.

This is the second time this season the Indians have designated Huff for assignment. The first came at the beginning of Spring Training, when the Indians did not have any room on their roster for the lefty. He was added to the 40-man roster again two weeks ago, but now his spot was needed once more. This time, Huff could elect free agency if he passes through waivers.

In three major league relief appearances, Huff, 28, allowed five earned runs. After being the 39th overall draft pick in the 2006 draft, Huff has a career 5.40 ERA over parts of five seasons.

Barnes, 25, pitched in three games earlier in the season for the Indians, allowing two earned runs in four innings. In 12 relief appearances for Columbus, Barnes has posted a 5.74 ERA.
