Rehab updates: Johnson, Beachy, Duffy

USA TODAY Sports

Taking a look at the progress of a few starters in their rehab assignments.

A few starting pitchers have begun rehab assignments, and hope to return to their respective team sometime in the coming weeks. Let's check out the progress some of those pitchers are making:

Johnson tosses four shutout innings

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Josh Johnson looked sharp is his second rehab start, tossing four shutout innings for Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday. Johnson threw 68 pitches, striking out three hitters while allowing one hit and one walk.

The starter has been on the disabled list since April 29 with right triceps inflammation. Johnson also pitched well in his second rehab start, and is unsure whether he will return to the team or make one more rehab start.

Beachy makes first rehab start

Atlanta Braves starter Brandon Beachy pitched in his first rehab game on Friday, allowing two runs over four innings for Triple-A Gwinnett. Beachy has been out since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June.

The right-hander battled his command, only throwing 35 of his 70 pitches for strikes, but is throwing at his normal velocity. Beachy will likely make a few more starts in the minors before returning by the end of June.

Duffy to begin rehab assignment

Kansas City Royals southpaw Danny Duffy will make his first rehab start on Sunday since he underwent Tommy John surgery last June. Duffy has thrown in simulated games, but this will be his first official start.

Duffy will pitch for Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and is expected to throw four innings. Royals manager Ned Yost wants Duffy to take his rehab "at his own pace," preaching caution with the young lefty.
