Minor injury notes: Beltran, Pagan, Smoak

USA TODAY Sports

A few players missed games on Sunday battling nagging injuries.

A few starting position players did not take the field on Sunday as their respective teams gave them an extra day to heal and rest. Let's take a look at some of those players.

Beltran day-to-day with shoulder soreness

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran was held out of the team's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a sore left shoulder.

Beltran first informed the team of the injury during the middle of the team's game on Saturday, which prompted manager Mike Matheny to replace Beltran in the lineup with Shane Robinson. Matheny said that Beltran could "possibly" be ready for team's series starting on Monday against the Kansas City Royals.

Pagan out with hamstring injury

The San Francisco Giants scratched outfielder Angel Pagan from the starting lineup with a left hamstring injury.

Pagan injured his hamstring while fielding a ball on Saturday against the Colorado Rockies. The outfielder stayed in the game, eventually hitting a walk-off inside-the-park home run. Giants manager Bruce Bochy did not know if the injury is related to Pagan's previous hamstring troubles, but he doesn't believe the injury is too serious.

Smoak sidelined with oblique injury

Seattle Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak missed the team's game against the Texas Rangers with a tight right oblique muscle.

Smoak felt something in his side taking a check swing early in the game, but stayed in for two more at-bats. The Mariners hope the injury is not too serious, as the first baseman is second on the team with a .352 on-base percentage.
