Oakland Athletics place Chris Young on DL, recall Michael Taylor

USA TODAY Sports

Taylor is recalled from Triple-A by the Athletics for the second time this season.

The Oakland Athletics placed outfielder Chris Young on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad, and recalled Michael Taylor to take his spot on the 25-man roster.

Young suffered his injury in the 15th inning during the Athletics 19-inning marathon game against the Los Angeles Angels. The outfielder has been unable to play since Monday, so his placement on the DL is retroactive to April 30.

The outfielder has been quite at the plate to start the season, hitting .172/.277/.391 in his first 101 plate appearances this season. Young appears to have been the victim of some tough luck at the plate, as he has managed to increase his walk rate, hit for power and cut down on his strikeouts so far in 2013. His offensive production this season has been hampered by a .172 BABIP, which is likely to regress towards his career .275 BABIP when he returns.

Taylor is returning to the major leagues for the second time this season, as the team originally recalled Taylor on April 13. The outfielder made appearances in three games, going 0=6 at the plate. The Athletics sent Taylor back to Triple-A on April 23.

The 27 year-old has swung the bat very well in Triple-A this season, hitting .329/.380/.616 in 18 games this season. Taylor has hit.158/.226/.228 in 62 major-league plate appearances.
