Miami Marlins: Solano to disabled list, Nick Green's contract purchased

The Marlins placed Donovan Solano on the disabled list on Tuesday and called up Nick Green to take his roster spot

The Miami Marlins have placed second baseman Donovan Solano on the disabled list and purchased the contract of Nick Green to take Solano's spot on the 25-man roster.

Solano, 25, is suffering from an intercostal strain, according to MLB.com. His DL stint will be retroactive to May 6.

The second year Solano made a splash last season when he hit .295 with a .342 OBP in 93 games during his rookie year. This season he was hitting .278/.333/.324 overall, but was starting to heat up as he hit .366 over his last ten games.

To replace Solano on the roster, the Marlins have purchased the contract of Nick Green. Green was designated for assignment this past Thursday and accepted an assignment to Triple-A. Now, he will rejoin both the 25-man and 40-man rosters.

Green is a veteran infleider who has played every position center field and catcher over his career. That includes pitching two innings in a game with the Boston Red Sox. He has not been a good hitter over his career, but in an eight-game major league stint this year had been swinging a hot bat.

The utility man figures to be a backup at shortstop, second base, and third base during Solano's time on the disabled list. The Marlins top bench player at all three positions, Chris Valaika appears ready to slot in to second base.

Valaika has played in 21 games this year hitting for just a .258 OBP and 65 OPS+. He has spent time at every position in the infield in 2013.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Green, Henderson Alvarez was transferred to the 60-day DL.
