Marlins: Chris Valaika to disabled list, Derek Dietrich called up

USA TODAY Sports

Valaika fractured his wrist and will be out for the foreseeable future. This continues the Marlins' injury woes in the middle infield.

The Miami Marlins placed second baseman Chris Valaika on the disabled list Wednesday due to a fractured wrist. In his place, Derek Dietrich's contract was purchased from Triple-A.

The injury occurred when Valaika swiped his glove attempting to tag out Yonder Alonso on a stolen base attempt, reports MLB.com.

Valaika, 27, was just recently installed in the starting lineup after the team lost Donovan Solano to injury on Tuesday. Nick Green was called up to take Solano's place. Chris Coghlan, who had not played the infield since his minor league debut, slotted into second base after Valaika left the game.

Valaika was hitting .219/.261/.344 in 70 plate appearances this season, playing all around the infield.

His replacement, Derek Dietrich, is capable of playing second, third, and shortstop but has never played above Double-A in his four year career. Dietrich, 23, had been hitting very well this season in Double-A Jacksonville in his first season in the Marlins organization. Through 28 games, his line stands at .282/.408/.505.

Alex Sanabia also came out of Tuesday's game early due to groin tightness, but all indications are that he should make his next start.

Casey Kotchman was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for Dietrich.
