Dodgers designate Ramon Hernandez for assignment

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

Only two months after acquiring him, the Dodgers say goodbye to the veteran catcher.

The Los Angeles Dodgers designated catcher Ramon Hernandez for assignment on Friday, in a move first reported by Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. The team now has ten days to trade, release, waive, or outright the 37-year old to the minors.

The move clears roster space for catcher A.J. Ellis, who is returning from the disabled list and will assume starting catching duties. Tim Federowicz will remain the backup now that Hernandez is out of the picture.

Since being acquired from the Rockies in exchange for Aaron Harang on April 6th, Hernandez has hit .208 with 3 HR and 6 RBI in 55 plate appearances. Because of his strong reputation as a veteran catcher, he will likely head to his third team of the young season via trade, free agent signing, or waiver claim.

In fifteen major league seasons with the Athletics (1999-2003), Padres (2004-2005), Orioles (2006-2008), Reds (2009-2011), Rockies (2012), and Dodgers (2013), Hernandez has hit .263 with 169 HR and 757 RBI. He was selected to the American League All-Star team in 2003, when he hit .273 with 21 HR and 78 RBI.
