2013 MLB Draft: Braves agree to deal with first rounder Jason Hursh

Mike Stobe

The Atlanta Braves have agreed to a slot value deal with Jason Hursh, the 31st overall pick in the draft.

The Atlanta Braves have agreed to terms with first-round pick Jason Hursh, according to a source. The right-hander will receive a bonus of $1,704,200, which is the slot value for the 31st overall pick.

Hursh, who pitched to a 2.79 ERA and 86/28 K/BB ratio in sixteen starts in his sophomore season at Oklahoma State, will forgo his last two seasons of eligibility to join the Braves organization. The 6'1", 200-pound righty underwent Tommy John surgery in 2011, and sat out the entire 2012 season before bouncing back with a successful 2013 campaign.

While many consider Hursh's off-speed pitches to be raw and unpolished, the value lies within his mid-to-upper 90's fastball with great movement. The Braves also like his changeup, and believe that he will have at least three strong pitches by the time he is done with his development in the Braves system.

With the agreement, Hursh becomes the 18th first round pick in this year's draft to agree to terms, and the 21st Braves draftee to sign with the team. He joins catcher Victor Caratini (2nd round, 65th overall), righty Carlos Salazar (3rd round, 102nd overall), catcher Tanner Murphy (4th round, 133rd overall), and shortstop Mikey Reynolds (6th round, 193rd overall) as top picks already committed to the Braves.
