Astros, Altuve agree to four-year, $12.5M deal

Bob Levey

The Houston Astros agreed to a four-year, $12.5M extension with two club options at $6M and $6.5M with second baseman Jose Altuve, the team announced Saturday afternoon. An agreement on a deal was first reported by Brian McTaggert of MLB.com.

Altuve's deal will cover his arbitration-eligible years and would allow him to be eligible for free agency after the 2017 season if the team does not pick up his options.

In addition to his deal, Altuve, 23, will receive a $750,000 bonus from the Astros this season. The 2012 All-Star is hitting .280 with three home runs, 15 doubles, 21 stolen bases and 28 RBI this season.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow commented on the Altuve extension that:

"Jose has quickly become the face of the franchise in less that two years, and we are excited to see keep him here for many years to come.
