Why is David Price off to such a slow start

After winning the Cy Young award last year people expected David Price to be even more dominate than last year. He has done exactly the opposite. Currently he is 1-4 with a 5.24 ERA in 9 starts. He was activated from the DL today and is starting tonight.

What is weird is that he is suddenly allowing balls to be put in play more often he has a 10.6 H/9 which is up from 7.4 a year ago. His HR/9 has doubled from 0.7 to 1.3. I think the problem is he is trying to throw as few pitches as he can to get out of the inning and ends up hanging some right down the middle. Last year he got 299 ground balls and 153 fly balls with 205 strikeouts. This year before he went onto the DL in April he had already gotten 84 ground balls and 53 fly balls in only 9 starts.

He is varying his pitches more than he did last year. He threw his 60.6% of the time last year but this year it is 55.3% of the time. He is throwing his cutter 16.9% of the time which is up from 15.7% last year. He has also used his changeup 13.1% which is up from 12.3%. His velocity is also down as his fastball has gone down 2.7 miles per hours and his 2-seam is also down 2 miles per hour. He has thrown 884 pitches this year which is about 16 pitches per inning. Last year he also averaged 16 pitches per inning which means he is just not as efficient as last year at making those pitches count.
