Red Sox trade rumors: Serious interest in Matt Lindstrom, "kicking the tires" on Jake Peavy

USA TODAY Sports

Boston seems more focused on Lindstrom than Peavy, who they are just "kicking the tires" on at this point.

The Boston Red Sox are have serious interest in Chicago White Sox reliever Matt Lindstrom but are only "kicking the tires" on a potential trade for starter Jake Peavy, according to a source familiar with the situation. The Red Sox are not currently showing any interest in any other available White Sox players.

Lindstrom, 33, is drawing interest from "a few teams", according to the source. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 3.35 ERA, 6.2 K/9, and 4.5 BB/9 in 50 appearances on the season, and is a free agent after the year.

The Tigers, Dodgers and Pirates are among the other teams looking for bullpen help, but it is not clear if any of those teams are in talks for Lindstrom.

Peavy is one of the most coveted starters on the trade market, and is drawing interest from multiple teams including the Cardinals, Athletics, Orioles and Braves.

"No team is being more aggressive" than the others, according to the source, but that will likely change before Wednesday's trade deadline.

Chicago has actively been scouting the Sox' minor league system, and the source notes that their focus is on middle infield and starting pitching prospects.

Because the teams are not in serious discussions about a deal for Peavy, mid-level prospects like Deven Marrero, Brian Johnson and Mookie Betts are among the names who the White Sox could be looking at.

The source confirmed that Red Sox' top prospect Xander Bogaerts is not being discussed in talks "based on what the Red Sox are looking for" from Chicago.

Boston is known to be looking all over the league for relief pitching options, and Alex Speier of WEEI.com says that the team may even be willing to flip recent acquisition Matt Thornton in exchange for a right-handed reliever. Thornton was acquired earlier in the month from the White Sox in exchange for minor league outfielder Brandon Jacobs.

One name to watch for the Red Sox is Royals' reliever Luke Hochevar, who they have shown interest in throughout the month. Kansas City has had scouts watching Boston's Double-A and Triple-A affiliates in recent days, according to sources.
