Alex Rios trade rumors: Yankees interested in White Sox OF

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

The Pirates and White Sox have also discussed a potential Rios trade, but are reportedly not close to a deal.

The New York Yankees have a renewed interest in Chicago White Sox outfielder Alex Rios, reports Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

The Yankees were interested in Rios as a backup plan in case their trade for Alfonso Soriano fell through. New York ended up acquiring Soriano from the Chicago Cubs, but are still looking into Rios.

Rios has the Yankees on his no-trade list, and the team was supposedly told that he would reject a trade to New York, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The outfielder refuted the claim, telling Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago:

"He should get his facts right because it puts me in a bad spot. I was never asked about that. I don't know where he's getting his insights."

Even if Rios accepts a trade to New York, it is unclear where the Yankees would play him. Vernon Wells, Ichiro Suzuki, Brett Gardner and Soriano are all healthy, while Curtis Granderson is hoping to return this weekend.

Earlier in the day, reports came out that the Pittsburgh Pirates were close to a deal with the White Sox for Rios. David Kaplan of CSN Chicago reported that cash was still a roadblock to complete a deal, and that he was unsure if the teams could clear the hurdle.

The money apparently remained an issue, as Jon Heyman of CBS Sports later reported that the two teams were not close to a deal.
