Kansas City Royals sign Jason Bergmann

The former National heads to the Royals organization after posting a 0.31 ERA in 29 appearances with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League.

The Kansas City Royals have signed right-hander Jason Bergmann to a minor league deal, a source has confirmed to MLBDailyDish's Chris Cotillo. Bergmann, 31, will likely report to Triple-A Omaha.

Bergmann has drawn interest throughout the season from many major league teams, but none of them had a spot for him in their system before the Royals came calling this week.

After posting a 3-3 record and 6.98 ERA with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate in 2012, Bergmann could not find an opportunity with a major league opportunity last winter and signed with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League. He has been excellent for Sugar Land, surrendering only one earned run in 29 innings of work on the season, and was recently named to the league's All-Star Game.

Bergmann is the sixth Skeeter to sign with a major league organization on the season, joining Sean Gallagher (Rockies), Chase Lambin (Royals), Dustin Martin (Diamondbacks), Michael Nix (White Sox), and Dustin Richardson (Angels). He joins fellow Atlantic Leaguers Lambin and Ben Broussard in the Royals organization.

In six major league seasons with the Washington Nationals from 2005 to 2010, Bergmann was 12-24 with a 5.04 ERA in 155 appearances (50 starts). He heads to the the Royals in hopes of being able to return to the major leagues after dominating the first half of the season with Sugar Land.
