Rockies acquire Mitchell Boggs from Cardinals

The former closer is changing organizations in exchange for international slot money.

The Colorado Rockies have acquired right-hander Mitchell Boggs from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for their fourth international signing bonus slot, in a move first reported by Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Rockies designated minor league pitcher Joe Gardner for assignment.

Boggs, 29, will join Double-A Tulsa in the Rockies' organization, while the Cardinals will receive $206,400 in international signing money.

After breaking into the majors with 24 appearances in 2008 and 2009, Boggs became a mainstay in the Cardinals' bullpen in 2010, logging a 3.61 ERA in 61 appearances. He pitched well in 2011 before his career year in 2012, when he was 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 78 relief appearances.

Boggs was named the Cardinals' closer at the beginning of the season due to Jason Motte's injury, but has been terrible in 14.2 innings of work. In addition to his 11.05 ERA, Boggs has posted a 2.455 WHIP and 9.2 BB/9 in his 18 appearances, and has spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Memphis. In 18 appearances in the minors, Boggs is 0-2 with a 5.70 ERA.

Because of Boggs' strong past performance and immense struggles this season, he is the perfect candidate for a change of scenery. Speaking to Langosch, Cardinals' general manager John Mozeliak admitted that he could not see Boggs ever getting back to the majors with the Cardinals.

"My thinking with Mitchell was it was going to be hard to get him back here, so we had to do something. No ill will toward him. Hopefully he gets himself back on track and productive in the big leagues."

Gardner, who was acquired in the 2011 Ubaldo Jimenez trade, is no longer considered a prospect by the Rockies. In 13 appearances with Tulsa on the season, the 25-year old is 3-2 with a 7.01 ERA in 25.2 innings of work.
