Royals acquire Jamey Carroll from Twins

The infielder stays in the AL Central, but is changing teams.

The Kansas City Royals have acquired infielder Jamey Carroll from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, according to an announcement from the team. Both teams will make accommodating roster moves on Monday.

Carroll, 39, has hit .230 with 9 RBI in 58 games on the season with the Twins, and will likely move into the starting role at second base for Kansas City.

The Royals have had consistent struggles at the position all season, with Chris Getz (.209 average in 53 games), Johnny Giavotella (.206 average in 10 games) and Elliot Johnson (.184 average in 78 games) manning the spot.

Getz is scheduled to be activated off the disabled list this week, but Carroll's arrival means that the two will likely split playing time at the position.

Carroll can also play third base and shortstop, and his versatility should help the Royals in the last month and a half of the season.

In twelve major league seasons with the Expos/Nationals (2002-2005), Rockies (2006-2007), Indians (2008-2009), Dodgers (2010-2011) and Twins (2012-2013), Carroll is a lifetime .274 hitter with 13 HR and 263 RBI. The Royals will hold a $2 million team option on him for the 2014 season, or may buy out his contract for $250K, making him a free agent.
