Rangers acquire Travis Blackley from Astros

The lefty will head to Triple-A Round Rock.

The Texas Rangers have acquired left-hander Travis Blackley from the Houston Astros in exchange for cash considerations, according to a league announcement. Blackley will be assigned to Triple-A Round Rock, but will likely be considered for a callup once rosters expand in September even though he is not on the 40-man roster.

Blackley, 30, was acquired by the Astros from the Athletics before the season and posted a 1-1 record with a 4.89 ERA, 7.5 K/9 and 5.1 BB/9 in 42 relief appearances on the season. He was recently designated for assignment by the Astros, but initially cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He appeared in one game for Oklahoma City, surrendering one earned run in two innings of work.

In parts of four major league seasons with the Mariners (2004), Giants (2007, 2012), Athletics (2012) and Astros (2013), Blackley is 8-8 with a 5.28 ERA in 78 career appearances (23 starts). He is the second Astros lefty to be dealt to a contender this week, joining Wesley Wright, who was sent to the Rays on Monday.
