Rays interested in Delmon Young

After his release from the Phillies, Young may head back to the place where he started his career.

The Tampa Bay Rays and soon-to-be free agent Delmon Young have mutual interest in a reunion, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Young is currently on unconditional release waivers, but will become eligible to sign with any team on Saturday as a free agent. Topkin notes that the sides are having ongoing conversations.

Young, 27, was released earlier in the week by the Phillies after hitting ..261 with 8 HR and 31 RBI in 80 games on the season. Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer noted at the time of the release that the slugger was nine plate appearances away from a $150K bonus, meaning that the Phillies were willing to cut him and utilize the less-expensive Casper Wells instead.

Young, the Rays' first overall pick in the 2003 draft, hit .293 with 16 HR and 103 RBI in two seasons (2006-2007) with the Rays before being traded to the Twins with Brendan Harris and Jason Pridie in exchange for Jason Bartlett, Eduardo Morlan and Matt Garza. In eight major league seasons with the Rays (2006-2007), Twins (2008-2011), Tigers (2011-2012) and Phillies (2013), Young has a career .283 average with 97 HR and 513 RBI.
