Red Sox, Royals swap Mortensen and Berry

USA TODAY Sports

According to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Boston Red Sox have sent reliever Clayton Mortensen to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Quintin Berry.

The Royals claimed Berry off waivers from the Detroit Tigers on June 4th, but he failed to appear in the majors for Kansas City. He has hit .222/.343/.292 over 48 games since the acquisition, all for Kansas City's Triple-A affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2012, he played in 94 games for the Tigers, hitting .258/.330/.354 with 18 extra base hits and 44 runs scored.

It is believed that the Red Sox acquired Berry to use as a potential pinch-runner in anticipation for an upcoming playoff run. Berry has stolen 21 bases in his career without being caught once.

Mortensen posted a 5.34 ERA over 30 and 1/3 innings for the Red Sox this season, before being sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket in June. He made 8 relief appearances for the Pawtucket Red Sox before being moved into the rotation on August 2nd. He has made 6 starts since then and has a cumulative 2.47 ERA in 43 and 2/3 innings for Pawtucket. He has a K/9 of 8.0, but is also walking over 4 batters per 9 innings.

The Red Sox acquired Mortensen for Marco Scutaro in a January, 2012 trade with the Colorado Rockies. He has pitched in 74 games with the Cardinals, Athletics, Rockies, and Red Sox, accruing a -0.2 WAR and 94 ERA+.
