The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired third baseman Michael Young and cash considerations from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for left-hander Rob Rasmussen, the teams announced. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com was the first to report the deal, and also noted that Young had to waive his no-trade clause to join the Dodgers, who he grew up rooting for.
Young was the subject of constant trade rumors in advance of the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline, and drew significant interest from the Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers and Orioles before the Phillies decided to hold onto him.
He then cleared revocable trade waivers in early August, making him eligible to be dealt to any team. The Dodgers, who have gotten solid production at third base all season from Juan Uribe (.268/7 HR/37 RBI in 109 games) swooped in to acquire Young less than an hour before the waiver trade deadline, in an effort to bolster the team's bench and clubhouse. Young will likely see time at both first and third base behind Uribe and Adrian Gonzalez.
In 125 games with the Phillies on the season, the 36-year old Young hit .272 with 8 HR and 41 RBI while seeing time at both corner infield positions. The seven-time All-Star is a free agent after the season, and will likely draw interest from many teams looking for a consistent producer on a short-term deal.
In fourteen major league seasons with the Rangers (2000-2012) and Phillies (2013), Young is a lifetime .300 hitter with 185 HR and 1,025 RBI.
Rasmussen, 24, was acquired by the Dodgers last offseason from the Astros in exchange for Jon Ely. He struggled mightily in 12 games with Triple-A Albuquerque, posting a 0-7 record and 6.46 ERA before being demoted to Double-A Chattanooga. In 16 appearances (14 starts) with Chattanooga, the southpaw is 3-4 with a 2.55 ERA. After being highly ranked in the Marlins' system after the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Rasmussen's stock has fallen considerably, and he was ranked as the Astros' 19th best prospect after last season.
