Angels sign John McDonald to minor league deal

Jared Wickerham

The 39-year old will head to Angels camp, likely as a mentor for the team's younger infielders.

The Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a minor league contract with infielder John McDonald, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.comBradford adds that the deal will include an invitation to major league spring training, and that McDonald will earn $850K plus incentives if he makes the major league roster.

McDonald, 39, appeared in the majors for four teams in 2013, ultimately receiving a World Series ring with the Red Sox. In 37 games with the Pirates, Phillies, Indians and Red Sox on the season, he hit .111 with 1 HR and 4 RBI in 54 at-bats.

McDonald will likely compete for a backup spot in the Angels' infield throughout spring training, along with Grant Green, Andrew Romine, and Tommy Field. All of those players likely have a leg up due to their status on the Angels' 40-man roster, but injuries or poor performance in spring training could allow McDonald to make his way onto the roster. At mininum, McDonald will provide a strong veteran presence for the Angels' young core of infielders throughout spring training.

In fifteen major league seasons, McDonald is the owner of a lifetime .235 average with 28 HR and 205 RBI in 1,005 games with the Indians (1999-2004, 2013), Blue Jays (2005, 2006-2011), Tigers (2005), Diamondbacks (2011-2012), Pirates (2013), Phillies (2013) and Red Sox (2013).
