Johan Santana making progress in rehab

Mike Stobe

The 34-year old left-hander remains in talks with several clubs.

Free agent left-hander Johan Santana is "feeling great" and "progressing better than he expected" in his rehab process, according to a baseball source with knowledge of the situation. Santana is currently in talks with several teams, and recently tweeted that he has started throwing off a mound this week.

Santana's velocity has not been measured yet, the source says, and the possibility of a public showcase for multiple teams in the near future still exists. Although Twins' GM Terry Ryan estimated that Santana would be ready for game action sometime during the summer, the source indicated that the return could come even sooner.

Santana, 34, has been linked to the Yankees, Mets, Twins, Indians, Rays, Orioles, Royals, Brewers and Pirates since becoming a free agent after last season. The two-time Cy Young Award winner last appeared in a major league game in 2012, and missed the entire 2013 season after re-tearing his shoulder capsule at the beginning of 2013.
