Red Sox sign Francisco Cordero to minor league deal

The veteran is looking to crack the Sox' bullpen after not pitching last season.

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a minor league contract with reliever Francisco Cordero, a source has confirmed. John Tomase of the Boston Herald was first to report the signing earlier today.

Cordero, who turns 39 in May, will get a chance to crack a Red Sox bullpen that has already added Burke Badenhop and Edward Mujica this offseason. The three-time All-Star last appeared in the majors in 2012 with the Blue Jays and Astros before having surgery on his non-throwing shoulder before last season. In 47 appearances with Toronto and Houston, Cordero was 3-8 with a 7.55 ERA in what amounted to the worst season of his major league career.

Outside of his disastrous 2012 season, Cordero has been one of the best late-inning relievers in baseball over the past decade. In fourteen major league seasons with the Tigers (1999), Rangers (2000-2006), Brewers (2006-2007), Reds (2008-2011), Blue Jays (2012) and Astros (2012), he is the owner of a lifetime 47-53 record and 3.38 ERA while notching 329 saves in 800 career games.
