Scott Baker opts out of deal with Mariners

The right-hander may draw interest from the Indians, Rangers, Royals and Braves.

Right-hander Scott Baker has decided to opt out of his contract with the Seattle Mariners and become a free agent, according to an industry source. Baker was in competition for a rotation spot, but will instead hit the open market in search of a job elsewhere.

Baker, 32, was 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in four starts during spring training after signing a minor league deal with the Mariners in late January. He had strong interest from the Indians, Rangers and Royals before signing with Seattle, so he could latch on with one of those teams in the next few days.

Another fit for Baker could be the Braves, who are known to be looking for starting pitching help after releasing Freddy Garcia this afternoon. Atlanta is reportedly interested in Aaron Harang, but could look at Baker as a more attractive alternative.

With Baker gone, pitchers Roenis Elias and Randy Wolf have likely been told that they will be on the Mariners' Opening Day roster.
