Nationals sign Kevin Frandsen to 1-year, $900K contract

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The veteran will likely be a backup infielder for the Nationals, who gave him a major league contract.

The Washington Nationals have agreed to a one-year, major league contract with infielder Scott Frandsen, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. The deal will pay Frandsen $900K in guaranteed money and can be worth up to $1.6MM if he reaches certain performance and award bonuses, as Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reported.

Frandsen, who elected free agency yesterday after the Phillies outrighted him off their 40-man roster, drew interest from two or three teams before agreeing to terms with the Nationals. He will likely serve as a utility infielder for Washington, a team that cut both Tyler Moore and Jamey Carroll from its major league roster earlier in the week. Frandsen has appeared at every infield position except shortstop over the last two years in Philadelphia, and also has some outfield experience at the major league level.

In 119 games with the Phillies last year, the 31-year old Frandsen hit .234 with 5 HR and 26 RBI in 278 at-bats. He is a veteran of seven major league seasons with the Giants (2006-2009), Angels (2010), and Phillies (2012-2013), posting a lifetime .259 average with 14 HR and 93 RBI in 402 major league games.
