White Sox acquire Gorkys Hernandez from the Royals

Benny Sieu-US PRESSWIRE

The Royals will send the former top prospect to the White Sox in exchange for cash considerations.

The Chicago White Sox have acquired outfielder Gorkys Hernandez in a trade with the Kansas City Royals, per the Chicago Tribune's Colleen Kane. In exchange for the 26-year-old, the Royals will receive cash considerations. Chicago immediately assigned Hernandez to Triple-A Charlotte.

Signed out of Venezuela by the Tigers in 2005, Hernandez was once a highly-touted prospect, being named to Baseball America's top 100 list twice, topping out at 62nd overall in 2009. A career .278/.339/.375 hitter in the minors, Hernandez has never lived up to his potential, and has played in just 70 games at the big league level, all of which came in 2012. The White Sox will be Hernandez's 6th organization in just nine professional seasons, as he has spent time with the Tigers, Braves, Pirates, Marlins, and Royals.

The move comes just hours after the announcement that right fielder Avisail Garcia will undergo season-ending surgery on a torn labrum. Hernandez figures to provide the White Sox with added outfield depth were the need to arise.
