Angels claim Brooks Raley off waivers from the Cubs

USA TODAY Sports

The left-hander will provide pitching depth for the Anges after starting the year with Triple-A Rochester.

The Los Angeles Angels have claimed left-hander Brooks Raley off waivers from the Minnesota Twins, according to Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The team needed to make a 40-man roster move to add right-hander Matt Guerrier, who was called up on Wednesday in advance of his opt-out date today.

Raley, 25, joined the Twins off waivers from the Cubs during the offseason, and began this season with Triple-A Rochester. In eight appearances (one start), he is 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 14.2 innings of work. He has seen time as both a starter and reliever throughout his career in the minors and majors, so it will interesting to see how the Angels plan to utilize him.

Raley made 14 appearances (5 starts) with the Cubs over the last two seasons, posting a 1-2 record and 7.04 ERA. He was better with Triple-A Iowa last season, when he was 8-10 with a 4.46 ERA in 27 games (25 starts).

Raley will likely head to Triple-A Salt Lake for the Angels, adding depth to a pitching staff that currently ranks 17th in the league in ERA (3.88).
