Red Sox promote Mookie Betts to majors

The fast-rising prospect will make his major league debut against the Yankees.

It's Mookie time, Red Sox fans. The Red Sox are promoting Mookie Betts to the major leagues today, as first reported by John Tomase of the Boston Herald.

Betts, who was playing second base for Single-A Greenville a year ago today, has risen quickly on to the scene as one of Boston's top prospects thanks to a torrid start that has seen him hit .345 with 8 HR and 48 RBI in 77 games split between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket. The 21-year old is in the process of being converted to an outfielder, and will likely see time in right field for the Red Sox as they try to get some offensive production out of the position.

Betts, who was a fifth round pick in the 2011 draft, was ranked by SoxProspects.com as the organization's tenth best prospect in early April, but has since risen to first place on their list. He was ranked by Baseball America as the team's seventh best prospect before the season, and MLB.com has him as Boston's fifth best young player.

The Red Sox had 38 players on their 40-man roster, so a move won't have to be made to get Betts on the 40-man. Right-hander Rubby De La Rosa will be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, as reports have already noted.
